Foam Board Insulation
The synthetic foam insulation items are used commonly in the buildings and foam board insulation has high R-value (i.e. resistance to the heat flow) when compared to some other kinds
of insulation.
Lots of variables affect final R-value of the foam insulation: initial density of a foam; blowing
gas that is used ( HCFC, CFC, air, CO2, or other gases); how panels are handled; type of facing used, and conditions under which panels are
installed.
In addition, there are some techniques of
installing the foam board insulation. You can also spray it as a chemical mixture from a small aerosol container, and apply it from the
pressure sprayer. As the chemical mixture heals, it fills and seals odd shaped spaces and wall stud cavities. In addition, you can apply foam
as liquid, which flows over obstructions prior to it expands and cures. Lastly, you can also pour plastic solidified foam as a loose bead in
concrete blocks and install it as the rigid panels, which can be cut in size.
Foam board insulation is an alternative in case there is inadequate space to install the non-foam products
when equal R-value of the non-foam insulation will require structural modification to install it. However, many insulation products, like
fiberglass and cellulose, cost very less for every given thickness, and they need more material to get same R-value for every inch as foam.
The foam insulation as well controls the air infiltration more efficiently than other types of insulation.
Foam board insulation is also made with some of these three materials: extruded expanded
polystyrene (XEPS), molded expanded polystyrene (MEPS), or else one of the forms of polyurethane, urethane, polyisocyanurate, or related
chemical mixture. Moreover, these materials are explained below.
Molded Expanded Polystyrene Boards
Molded expanded polystyrene starts as a minute bead of foam and when formed in boards, MEPS beads
turn into breadboard. This is a closed cell bead foam that is molded in many daily items, like picnic ice chests, coffee cups, and shipping
materials.
In order to make breadboard, the loose and unexpanded foam beads having liquid pentane are all
mixed with a blowing agent and then poured into the mold. Controlled quantity of heat expands beads to about 30 times of their original size.
Beads are after that injected in a vacuum mold and under more heat and pressure, they expand After curing, blocks are then cut in required
sizes. Physical properties of MEPS differ with the kind of bead that is used, but the density of foam board insulation is generally one pound
