Blown Attic Insulation

How to Install it?

Blown attic insulation installation is not difficult. However, it is very important to get help from a professional or follow some crucial steps to make sure that you have installed it correctly.

There are several steps to follow in this process. Here are the steps to take in to consideration:

  • Step one - Measure: This is an important step to follow in this regard. You must measure your entire attic area that you desire to insulate. Generally, attics require a value of R-49, R-30 or R-38. This depends on the climate and location you put up. Once you have determined the exact square footage of the attic, it is easy to analyze the amount of insulation you would require just giving a glance on the chart that is usually found on the insulation bag.
  • Step two - Materials:  Way before starting with your blown attic insulation installation process, you require knowing the type of materials you require. Usually, you would require the following materials:
  • Loose fill insulation
  • Flashing
  • Cardboard baffles
  • Duct  tape
  • Utility knife
  • Staple hammer
  • Staples
  • Ladder
  • Step three - Preparation: Your attic will require a good amount of preparation prior to the insulation process. You need to ensure that you have your dust mask, long sleeve shirt and protective goggles. All the recessed lights need to have installed flashing with an open space of about 4 inches from the light’s flashing. You also require using a utility knife to cut flashing in to the correct length and create a cylindrical shape. It is important to secure the edge with the help of duct tape.

  • Step four - Baffles: This is also an important step. You need to install baffles using a staple gun.  Try to install these at the point where ceiling joists exactly intersect in conjunction with roof rafters. Make doubly sure that you install the baffles over the vents and higher enough.

  • Step five - Create a dam: This step includes constructing a dam all around the access hole of the attic. The best and the easiest method are to cut a few cardboard baffles in to four inches length just above the actual blown attic insulation amount you want to install. This will facilitate an even depth for insulation you blow in.

  • Step six - Water: In case, you want to use fiber glass insulation, take someone’s help and add a cup full of water to it. You need to spread it over the top once it is loaded in to the machine. This is very helpful in cutting down static electricity while you blow the insulation. It will lay down in a uniform manner during the installation process.

  • Step seven - Wait: Once the insulation bag is loaded in to the hopper, it will take some minutes before loading the next bag.

Following all the steps mentioned above will let you install blown attic insulation effectively and enjoy the benefits from it.
